The outer salt barn , built in 1673 outside the city fortifications directly on the Rhine , is located approx. 200 meters up the Rhine from Freie Platz in Schaffhausen , Switzerland . Originally, the outer salt mine was created as a storage facility for salt. It is probably an extension, as the Merian engraving from 1642 already shows a building of similar dimensions.

design type

The lower part of the building was made of stone in solid construction, the roof structure made of wood.

In 1961 the construction of the new Schaffhausen power station began. The newly created dam section required extensive adjustments to the banks. At the same time, therefore, the Rheinuferstrasse, the new Rhine bridge , the ship landing and the Lindli promenade to Büsingen were built. The redesign of the banks of the Rhine also had an impact on the outer Salzstadel, which was originally located directly on the Rhine. The new bank promenade was built between the Rhine and Salzstadel. The promenade is about 30 cm higher than the rest of the surrounding area. This can be seen particularly well at the gates that originally led directly to the Rhine.

use

Until the construction of the railway lines around 1860, the Schaffhausen shipyard was a flourishing trading point for salt for centuries. Schaffhausen temporarily had the largest salt depot in the Swiss Confederation. The salt came mainly from Tyrol and Bavaria . In addition to the outer salt barn, the Schweizerhof and Güterhof on the landing stage still bear witness to this flourishing time.

After the movement of goods on the Rhine was stopped, the building served as a warehouse for the municipal civil engineering department. The entrance area has been enlarged for better use. This intervention was reversed during the extensive renovation in 1954. The last exterior renovation took place in 2007.

The direct location on the Rhine is ideal for use by water sports clubs. The Rhine can be reached via steps. The Schaffhausen Water Sports Association rented the building from the early 1920s. In 1926 the rowing club moved into a new domicile in Feuerthalen . Since then, the eastern part of the outer Salzstadel has served as a boathouse for the local section of the Swiss river walkers, today's Schaffhausen Canoe Club. In addition, the fishing club, the pontooning club ( pontooning sport ) and the motorboat club use the remaining parts of the historic building.
