The Schweizerhof at Freie Platz

The Schweizerhof , built in 1529, is located on Freie Platz , on the Schaffhausen ship landing stage , Switzerland . The building was built as a warehouse for salt that was transported on the Rhine . Since it was founded in the 11th century, the city of Schaffhausen has benefited from the fact that all goods transported on the Rhine from Lake Constance to Basel or vice versa had to be reloaded onto wagons because of the inaccessible rapids and the Rhine Falls . Together with the Güterhof , it is the last witness of a once mighty ensemble of storage buildings on the Rhine.

construction

The Schweizerhof was built in 1529. The roof structure in particular was built using the tenon method with great manual effort. In professional circles, it is considered exceptional and has a rarity. The spacious attic, however, could never be used for storage purposes. The whole plot with garden covers an area of around 1000 square meters. The part of the house facing away from the Rhine forms part of the “lower town”. Hardly any structural changes were made to the Schweizerhof for 300 years. Remains of a fresco could still be seen on the east facade until the 1950s .

use

Until the construction of the railway lines around 1860, the shipyard was a flourishing transshipment point for salt for centuries. Schaffhausen temporarily had the largest salt depot in the Swiss Confederation. The salt came mainly from Tyrol and Bavaria .

The Schweizerhof has been used multifunctionally since its construction. In addition to the salt store, magazines and offices, there were also seven apartments. The building was originally called "Salzhof" or "Scheibenhof". The salt stored in it was pressed into a disc shape. In the second half of the 19th century, a restaurant with a garden under the name “Schweizerhalle” was opened on the ground floor.

The canton of Schaffhausen sold the Schweizerhof to the municipal waterworks in 1864. In 1892 the building went into private ownership. Until 2007, the owner family ran a restaurant with a garden on the ground floor. There are also four shops and a few simple apartments in the building. In 2008 Kornhaus Liegenschaften Schaffhausen AG, which had already renovated the Güterhof opposite, bought the building and renovated it extensively.
