The Güterhof before the renovation

The Güterhof , built in 1787, is located on Freie Platz , directly on the Schaffhausen shipyard , Switzerland . The building was originally built as a warehouse for salt transported on the Rhine . The stately building was barely used for several decades. Since the total renovation in 2007/2008 it has shown itself in new splendor. There is a restaurant on the ground floor with a terrace facing the Rhine. Office space was built into the three upper floors. The Güterhof can be seen on almost every classic postcard view of Schaffhausen with Munot , Schweizerhof , Rhine and Schifflände.

Before the construction of the Güterhof

Since it was founded in the 11th century, the city of Schaffhausen has benefited from the fact that all goods transported on the Rhine from Lake Constance to Basel or vice versa had to be reloaded onto wagons because of the inaccessible rapids and the Rhine Falls . For a long time the Paradieserhaus, an administration and warehouse of the Clariss Monastery of Paradies and the Wasserhof stood on the current vacant space . This warehouse was built directly on the Rhine. Where the Güterhof stands today, there was a fortification ditch and the city wall that led from the old Schwarztor to the oven, a round bulwark on the banks of the Rhine.

Construction and reconstruction of the Güterhof

The construction of the Güterhof in 1787 was a milestone for Schaffhausen. For the first time, the old city wall, which was no longer required, was razed, the moat was filled in and the Güterhof was built over. The floor plan was chosen in the spirit of the times in a trapezoidal shape with a small inner courtyard. In addition, in contrast to the surrounding buildings, no post-Gothic pitched roof was built, but a flat gable roof. The generous windowing in regular axes indicates the late Baroque era. The Güterhof originally stood directly on the Rhine on its south side. The barges could be loaded and unloaded directly on the ground floor. The landing stage in its current form was only created in the 1960s when the power plant and the Rhine bridge were being built.

The Güterhof was converted from a warehouse into a department store after 1848. A fine canopy was built towards the open space. It enabled protected reloading of goods. In 1849 a little roof turret with clockwork from the company Mäder from Andelfingen was put on. The bell that came from the broken Inner Rhine Gate struck the hour. In 1842 the people of Schaffhausen decided to give their city more air. The landing site on the Rhine was redesigned. An open space was created between Güterhof and the older Schweizerhof, also an old warehouse. The new place was appropriately called Free Place . In 1857 the first railway line reached Schaffhausen with the Rheinfallbahn . The transport of goods on the Rhine and thus also the Güterhof quickly lost its importance.

The next major renovation took place in 1936. The then cantonal master builder Emil Gürtler had the lime blocks and the half-timbered exposed in the local style. Since many of the window panes were missing, the shutters were closed. This gave the Güterhof a repellent and unfriendly appearance until the total renovation in 2007/2008.

Renovation and new use 2007/2008

After a project to convert the Güterhof into a hotel in the 1990s failed for financial and legal reasons, the community of Schaffhausen, as the owner, made a new attempt to convert the Güterhof into a meaningful use. In 2006, the city council tendered the Güterhof to be taken over under building law . Kornhaus Liegenschaften Schaffhausen AG was awarded the contract. This company has already successfully restored the venerable and also neglected '' Kornhaus '' on the Herrenacker in Schaffhausen. The building was partially built with a basement and a restaurant was set up in the large halls on the ground floor. The upper floors were accessed via two new stairwells. Offices were built into the two upper floors and the attic with its numerous French balconies . The historical substance was largely spared as far as possible. The clock on the roof turret has also been restored. The bell strikes the hour again today.

facade

On old views it can be seen that the facade of the two lower floors was originally mural, on the top floor it appeared as a half-timbered structure . The windows already had shutters. During the renovation, the question arose whether the facade should be plastered again. Since the limestone was irregularly cut and roughened, the decision to apply plaster was an easy one.
