Édouard-Gérard Balbiani

Édouard-Gérard Balbiani (born July 31, 1823 in Port-au-Prince , Haiti , † July 25, 1899 ) was a French embryologist and zoologist .

Balbiani studied natural sciences in Paris with the zoologist Henri Marie Ducrotay de Blainville .

From 1874 until his death in 1899 he was professor of embryology at the Collège de France .

Together with the anatomist Louis-Antoine Ranvier (1835-1922) he founded the journal Archives d'anatomie microscopique . Balbiani discovered the Balbiani ring named after him , see polytene chromosome , and described a number of new taxa of the protozoa .

In 1884 his daughter Laure Balbiani married the psychologist Alfred Binet .
