Édouard Joseph Dantan (born August 26, 1848 in Paris , † July 7, 1897 in Villerville , Calvados ) was a French painter .

Life

Édouard Joseph Dantan was the son of the sculptor Antoine Laurent Dantan . At the age of 16 he attended the École des Beaux-Arts and entered Isidore Pils' studio . Due to his talent, which was shown at an early stage, he was commissioned in 1867 to create a large wax-colored painting of the Holy Trinity for the pediment of a chapel in Marnes. In 1869 he exhibited the episode from the fall of Pompeii for the first time in the Paris Salon .

After the Franco-Prussian War, in addition to scenes from ancient mythology and history, inspired by the traditions of his family, he repeatedly painted representations of sculpting studios. His pictures, which were shaped by the academic painting style, found official recognition and some of his works were bought by the state. Dantan was a member of the salon jury for 1890, 1894 and 1895. Towards the end of his life he took pictures of his holiday resort Villerville in Normandy.
