Joseph Émile Dupont (born June 23, 1834 in Liège , Province of Liège , Belgium ; † March 12, 1912 ibid) was a Belgian liberal politician and a militant advocate of Wallonia .

biography

After attending school, he studied law and worked as a lawyer after gaining a doctorate in law .

He began his political career as a liberal, initially as a member of the Council of the Province of Liège. In 1864 he was elected a member of the Chamber of Deputies for the first time and was a member of it until 1890. There he was particularly active in the debate about the language legislation in 1873, defending the interests of Wallonia.

After leaving the Chamber of Deputies, he became a member of the Senate in 1890 and was a member of it until his death. At times he was Vice President of the Senate.

For his services, he was awarded the honorary title of Minister of State on May 6, 1907 .

At the beginning of the 20th century , together with Jules Destrée and Charles Magnette, he was one of the forefathers of the Wallonia Movement, the Wallon Movement . In 1910 he attracted widespread attention with a memorandum in which he preferred the division of administration rather than the law on the bilingualism of secretaries of the courts. This font became known mainly because it appeared two years before the Walloon Movement was actually founded.
