Éric Stéfanini (born April 16, 1963 in Philippeville , Algeria ) is a former French football player .

Career

Stéfanini began his career in the Stade Laval youth team , where he was used both in central midfield and as a winger. In the 1979/80 season he was a 16-year-old for the first time in the squad of the first division team, but was not used. He made his debut in the following season, but was only used regularly from the 1982/83 season. He and the team achieved the surprising qualification for the UEFA Cup . There the team made an unexpected entry into the second round, where they lost 2-0 to FK Austria Wien in the first leg . Stéfanini made it 3-0 with a long-range shot, which would have meant progress had it not been for three more goals. Nevertheless, this was the beginning of a season in which Stéfanini became a regular player. He was considered a candidate for inclusion in the French national team , even if he never made it into it. He stayed that way until he left the club in 1987 together with some other top performers.

He signed with the second division Olympique Nîmes , with whom he sought promotion to the first division. After that failed, he decided in 1988 to move to Le Havre AC . At that time, he was under pressure to confirm the good performances from the early years of his career. Although he reached the relegation with Le Havre, but failed there on promotion. Therefore, he left this club after only a year and instead signed with the also second-rate Red Star Paris . Although the team struggled against relegation, Stéfanini was able to improve significantly in his performance. Accordingly, he moved in 1991 to the promotion candidate SCO Angers . There, too, he was one of the top performers of a team that failed in the 1991/92 season only in relegation on promotion. After the successful promotion a year later, he led the team as captain in the first division season 1993/94. However, this resulted in direct relegation. Back in the second division, the team had to fight against the crash into the third division in the 1994/95 season. At the end of the season, Stéfanini ended his career at the age of 32. In addition to his work in a company, he trained as a trainer, but was only active as such for some time in two lower-class clubs.
