Étienne Balázs or Stefan Balázs (born January 24, 1905 in Budapest , † November 29, 1963 in Paris ), actually István Balazs, was a Hungarian sinologist.

Life

Balazs spent his childhood and youth in Budapest. Through early religious-historical studies, he came to Sinology via Buddhism . In 1923 he continued his studies in Berlin begun in Budapest continued and completed his doctorate in 1930 at Otto Franke with magna cum laude.

Active in the resistance, Balazs had to leave Germany in 1935. After Paris was also occupied, he and his wife retired to the countryside in Meauzac in the Tarn-et-Garonne department in 1940 and lived from cultivating a few fields until 1945.

A collection of articles by Balazs has been edited in French by Paul Demiéville under the title "La bureaucratie céleste". These articles contain the unmatched representation of the bureaucratic Confucian state, including the complex relationship between the emperors and the civil servants-scholars, the latter being the actual bearers of this unique state structure.
