Étienne Joseph Louis Garnier-Pagès
Étienne Joseph Louis Garnier-Pagès (born December 27, 1801 in Marseille , † June 23, 1841 in Paris ) was a French politician.
Life
Garnier-Pagès, a supporter of democracy under the July Monarchy , was studying rights and practicing law when the July Revolution broke out. Immediately he rushed to Paris, took part in the struggle of the three days , became a member of the Chamber of Deputies in 1831 and, as an ardent republican, soon became one of the main champions of the Democratic Party, distinguished by his level-headedness and calm and as a speaker by the delicacy of his dialectics.
First he caused a stir when he and 40 other deputies, including the Marquis de La Fayette and Jean Maximilien Lamarque , signed the report against the policy of the " Juste Milieu ".
As a member of the association " Aide-toi, le ciel t'aidera " accused of participating in the republican uprising of July 28, 1832, he kept in hiding, but after the state of siege was lifted, he voluntarily surrendered to his judges and was acquitted. In 1834 he defended the democratic associations against the attacks of François Guizot , who was himself a member of that association. In the 1837 Chamber's debates about the secret funds , he subjected Guizot's life as a statesman to sharp, biting criticism.
