Éva Novák-Gerard (born January 8, 1930 in Budapest , † June 30, 2005 in Brussels ) was a Hungarian swimmer .
Life
Éva Novák was a member of the Hungarian national team from 1947 to 1953. At the 1948 Summer Olympics in London , she won the bronze medal in the 200-meter breaststroke. In 1950 and 1951 she broke the world record twice over the 200 m breaststroke, most recently with a time of 2: 48.5 minutes. The following year she took part in the Summer Olympics in Helsinki , where she won a silver medal in the 200 m chest. Together with her older sister Ilona Novák (1925-2019), Judit Temes and Katalin Szőke , she also won the gold medal in the 4 × 100 m freestyle relay . With a time of 4: 24.4 min, her relay broke the previous long-course world record, which the Hungarian swimmers had only set in April of the same year in Moscow, there in the cast of Mária Littomericzky , Éva Novák, Éva Székely and Katalin Szöke. In addition to her international successes, Novák won 33 Hungarian titles.
In Helsinki , Éva Novák met her future husband, the Belgian reporter Pierre Gérard. She moved to Brussels, where she studied medicine and later practiced as a doctor. She swam for her new home country, won eight Belgian titles and took part in the 1956 Olympic Games for Belgium . For a long time she was unable to return to Hungary because of the Iron Curtain .
In 1973 she was inducted into the International Swimming Hall of Fame with her sister Ilona Novák . They were the only pair of sisters to ever win Olympic gold in swimming.
Éva Novák died in Brussels at the age of 75. She was buried in the Farkasréti Cemetery in Budapest.
