Ézsaiás Budai

Ézsaiás Budai (born May 7, 1766 in Pér ; † July 14, 1841 in Debrecen ) was a Hungarian Reformed theologian and church dignitary as well as educator, classical philologist and historian.

Life

Budai came from a noble Hungarian family. His uncle Ferenc Budai (1760–1802) had already been a Reformed pastor and also the author of a historical lexicon, the Polgári Lexicon , which was published posthumously by his nephew. Ézsaiás Budai first studied at the Reformed College, the forerunner of the University of Debrecen , and became a supplent (assistant teacher) for Greek and Roman literature. The college financed a two-year study visit to the University of Göttingen for him, whose father had died early . From 1792 to 1794 he attended lectures there with Christian Gottlob Heyne , Christoph Meiners , August Ludwig von Schlözer and Ludwig Timotheus Spittler , with whom he remained in friendly correspondence for a long time. After a trip to Holland and England he became a professor of philosophy at the University of Göttingen for a short time, but returned to the College of Debrecen in 1794. There he taught classical literature and history until 1808 and then religious studies until 1821. He reorganized the training at the teaching staff by holding separate pedagogy lectures for the teachers, updating the teaching materials in line with the times and arranging the library. In the Reformed Church in Hungary he was first chief notary of the church district on the other side of the Tisza in 1813 , then first preacher in Debrecen in 1821 and finally in 1822 superintendent of the church district across the Tisza. In 1831 Budai was made an honorary member of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences .
