Íñigo Méndez de Vigo y Montojo (born January 21, 1956 in Tétouan , Morocco ) is a Spanish politician of the conservative PP party , Minister of Europe since 2011 and Minister of Education, Culture and Sport since June 25, 2015. Between 1992 and 2011 he was a member of the European Parliament .

Life

After studying law at the Complutense University of Madrid , which he graduated in 1978, Méndez de Vigo became a member of the Spanish Parliament in 1981 . In addition, he was a professor for constitutional law from 1981 to 1984, also at Complutense University, and for European law from 1989 to 1991 . From 1999 to 2004 he held the Jean Monnet Chair for European Institutions at the Complutense University, after which he was awarded an Honorary Jean Monnet Professorship.

Since 1990 he has held various high-ranking roles in the conservative PP party . From 1990 to 1993 he was a member of the party's national disciplinary committee, and in 1992 he became a member of the party executive committee. In the same year he also moved into the European Parliament for the first time as a successor , to which he has been a member since then as a member of the Group of the European People's Party . Méndez de Vigo was mainly concerned with the further development of the contractual basis of the European Union : from 1994 to 1996 he was deputy chairman, since then coordinator of the EPP in the committee for institutional questions . He was also a member of the first European Convention from 1999-2000, which drafted the EU Charter of Fundamental Rights under the chairmanship of Roman Herzog , and from 2002-2003 the second Convention, which drafted the EU Constitutional Treaty. He was chairman of the European Parliament delegation in both conventions. Also at the Intergovernmental Conference , which revised the draft constitution 2003/04, Méndez de Vigo took part as representatives of the European Parliament.

Méndez de Vigo was most recently re-elected in the European elections in Spain in 2009 and has been a member of the Committee on Economic and Monetary Affairs since then .

On June 25, 2015, Méndez de Vigo succeeded his predecessor José Ignacio Wert as Minister for Education, Culture and Sport in the Rajoy cabinet .
