The Ile aux Cerfs [il o sɛʁ] (literally "Deer Island") is a 87 hectare large island east of Mauritius in the Indian Ocean area.

location

It is located in the largest lagoon in Mauritius not far from the coastal town of Trou d'Eau Douce and belongs to the Flacq district . It is located within the coral reef that surrounds large parts of Mauritius.

Origin of name

The island got its name from the Sambar deer, also known as Java deer, which Dutch settlers introduced for hunting at the beginning of the 17th century and released into the wild to ensure the supply of meat. There are now no more deer on the island.

Flora and fauna

The vegetation is characterized by horsetail casuarines and palm trees as well as mangroves. Sea urchins can be found outside the marked bathing bays .

Current situation

The island is uninhabited, government-owned and can only be reached by boat from the main island of Mauritius. The Île aux Cerfs with its fine white sandy beaches is very popular as a seaside resort with tourists and locals alike. 800 to 1000 guests visit the island every day. Tourism on the Île aux Cerfs generates annual income of around ten million euros.

In addition to public showers and toilets, there are three beach restaurants on the island. One of them was built on the highest point of the island. There is also a large selection of water sports on offer. There is also an 18-hole, par 72 championship golf course on the island , designed by German professional golfer Bernhard Langer . There is also the five-star Hotel Touessrok on the island. The hotel, restaurants and the golf course were acquired by the hotel group Sun Resort Ltd. that the island has leased from the government.

history

The island's tourist development began around 1985.

The golf course was opened in 1998 by the Sun Resort Ltd. hotel group. erected against protests by politicians and environmentalists. The Minister of Tourism, meanwhile, spoke out in favor of building the golf course. The golf course covers an area of 40 hectares, of which 20 hectares had to be cleared for construction. According to critics, the impact on erosion, displacement of endemic vegetation, fresh water requirements and the use of pesticides were not sufficiently taken into account when planning the golf course.

In the early 2000s, little consideration was given to the island's flora and fauna, when numerous unlicensed tourist guides brought countless visitors to the island. As a result, the Mauritius Tourism Promotion Authority adopted various rules to protect the environment. The Île aux Cerfs took on the role of a test project, which ended shortly after Easter 2011 with the island being closed for two days. Since then, with the exception of one part of the island, barbecuing or lighting open fires has been prohibited. In addition, no further buildings may be erected and only licensed tourist guides are allowed to drive to the island.
