The BBÖ 1070 and BBÖ 1070.1 were electrically powered shunting - locomotive series of BBÖ .

history

1161.012-8 in Villach-Westbahnhof (August 3, 1986)
1161 006-5 in Innsbruck (1992)

Due to the rapidly expanding electrification in western Austria, there was a need for powerful shunting locomotives as early as the early 1920s in order to rationalize the shunting trips that were mostly taken over from old steam locomotives . The new locomotives should be suitable for light shunting service in train stations, light route service and service on drainage mountains and have a maximum speed of 40 km / h and a maximum axle load of 14 t. In 1925 the BBÖ ordered three such locomotives from AEG in Vienna (electrical part) and the locomotive factory Floridsdorf (mechanical part); in the same year the order was increased by two locomotives. The machines were delivered to the BBÖ in 1926. The locomotives were added to the BBÖ's inventory as 1070.01–05. This was followed by 16 of the slightly modified 1070.1 series (see table), which were delivered between 1928 and 1932.

After the connection of Austria to the German Reich , the locomotives, which are now in the inventory of were Deutsche Reichsbahn were redrawn: The series 1070 became the E 61, 1070.1 to E 61.1. In 1940 and 1941 six more locomotives of the E 61.1 series were procured. The E 61 103 was a war loss; all other machines were taken over by the Austrian Federal Railways after the Second World War and designated as 1061 (ex E 61) and 1161 (ex E 61.1).

The locomotives fulfilled the expectations placed in them quite well and remained without major modifications. The last representative of the 1061 series, the 1061.002, was retired on April 1, 1993; the 1161 series was withdrawn from service until 1994.
