Verejnosť proti násiliu

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Verejnosť proti násiliu (German public against violence , abbreviated VPN) was a political movement in Czechoslovakia from 1989-1992.

It was founded in Bratislava shortly after the outbreak of the Velvet Revolution on November 19, 1989 and was the main Slovak opposition movement against the communist government . It was the equivalent of the Czech citizens' forum .

The movement successfully participated in the first free elections since 1946 in June 1990 and was part of the first government without the communist party (see Mečiar I government ).

The later movement for a democratic Slovakia split from the VPN in 1991. The rest of the movement lost its influence. A large part of the members founded the Občianska Demokratická únia - VPN ( Civil Democratic Union - VPN , abbreviated ODÚ-VPN , later just ODÚ ) party in 1992 , which was disbanded after its poor performance in the 1992 elections in November 1992.
