Ecumenical study group for Bible reading

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Ecumenical Working Group for Biblical Reading (abbreviated to ÖAB ) is a working group of various Protestant and Catholic institutions that annually draws up an ecumenical Bible reading plan (Continua Bible reading) for the entire German-speaking area, and also defines the annual slogans and monthly sayings . All these determinations are made according to the proposals of the members at the annual delegates meeting of the working group.

history

Its forerunner on the Protestant side was the so-called “Text Plan Committee”, which was formed in 1938 by Protestant youth associations, the men's service of the Confessing Church , the Evangelical Methodist Church and the Baptist communities in Germany. Under the leadership of Otto Riethmüller (1889–1938), the long-time chairman of the Burckhardthaus , Bible reading plans and annual solutions have been published since 1930. The Catholic Biblical Works and the Bibelpastoral Arbeitsstelle of the Berlin Ordinarienkonferenz in the former GDR joined the Text Plan Committee in 1969, from which the Ecumenical Working Group for Bible Reading was formed in 1970 .

activity

The ÖAB creates two different Bible reading plans every year:

  1. the “classic” ecumenical Bible reading plan , in which a passage from the Bible is offered for reading for each day of the year . This plan runs through the entire New Testament within four years and through the Old Testament within eight years of selection . The late writings of the Old Testament are also read, but always with an alternative from a non-apocryphal book of the Bible. This Bible reading plan is included in the standard editions of the Moravian Slogans, which makes it widespread.
  2. the Bible Reading Plan compact , which is aimed at people who want to start over with Bible reading.

Furthermore, the ÖAB selects a word from the Bible as the annual motto from those biblical passages that the reading plan provides for the respective year. In addition, from the texts proposed for reading in a certain month, a quote is determined as the monthly saying. Two ecclesiastically recognized Bible translations (each in the text version of the latest revision) are taken as the basis as equally as possible, the Luther Bible and the standard translation .
