The interstate relationship between Austria and Sri Lanka is referred to as Austrian-Sri Lankan relations . Relations between the two countries can be described as friendly.

history

Diplomatic relations have existed between the Republic of Austria and the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka since April 23, 1954. As part of the Austrian Development Cooperation , local companies in Sri Lanka that produce in particularly isolated parts of the island are supported in terms of production and marketing within the framework of economic partnerships. In 1998, Sri Lanka's Minister of Health Niletti Nimal Siripala de Silva visited Austria. In 1999 the Austrian State Secretary for Foreign Affairs, Benita Ferrero-Waldner , came to Sri Lanka. In 2003 the Sri Lankan Foreign Minister Tyronne Fernando came to the Alpine republic. After the seaquake disaster of December 26, 2004 , the Austrian civilian population helped with more than 54 million euros in private donations that were collected as part of the Neighbor in Need campaign . The Austrian federal government and the Austrian regional authorities provided a reconstruction program worth 49 million euros for the entire region - 28 million euros of which were earmarked for Sri Lanka alone. In 2005, the then Austrian Vice Chancellor and Minister for Transport, Innovation and Technology Hubert Gorbach and Foreign Minister Ursula Plassnik visited Sri Lanka. The Sri Lankan State Secretary in the Foreign Ministry Palitha Kohona visited Austria in 2007. A delegation from the Austrian Federal Ministry of Finance was in Sri Lanka from September 10th to 14th, 2007 to negotiate a bilateral double taxation agreement. In 2009 the Sri Lankan Minister for Higher Education Wiswa Warnapala stayed in Linz and Vienna . The Sri Lankan energy minister, Champika Ranawaka , came to Austria in 2010 during talks with the international energy authority. Wolfgang Waldner , then State Secretary in the Austrian Foreign Ministry, visited Sri Lanka on April 30, 2012. On June 25 and 26, 2015, the Sri Lankan Finance Minister Ravi Karunanayake came to Vienna for a working visit. In 2016, the Sri Lankan President Maithripala Sirisena visited Austria together with Foreign Minister Mangala Samaraweera , Finance Minister Ravi Karunanayake, Education Minister Mahinda Samarasinghe and Primary Industry Minister Daya Gamage . They met with Federal President Heinz Fischer and took part in a WKO economic forum. The Austrian Ambassador Brigitte Öppinger-Walchshofer paid a visit to the Sri Lankan President Maithripala Sirisena on the occasion of her appointment as Ambassador on April 11, 2018.

Sri Lanka is represented in Austria by its embassy in Vienna and an honorary consulate in Graz. The ambassador in Vienna is also the representation at the international organizations in Vienna.

Sri Lanka is in the area of ​​responsibility of the Austrian Embassy New Delhi . An honorary consulate in Colombo, headed by the embassy in India, takes care of Austria's consular concerns in Sri Lanka.

In 2016, goods worth 49 million euros were exported from Austria to Sri Lanka. The most important Austrian export goods are mechanical engineering products, embroidery, paper, cardboard, steel products, dairy products, medical technology as well as measuring and testing devices. Goods with a total value of EUR 74 million were imported into Austria. Austria's most important import products from Sri Lanka are clothing. Austria’s most important import products from Sri Lanka are clothing and accessories, sporting goods, toys, rubber products and food such as coffee, tea and spices.
