The states of Austria and East Timor maintain smooth relations.

history

During the Indonesian occupation, the parties of East Timor met at Schlaining Castle (1995) and Krumbach Castle (1998) for talks about the aspirations for independence. Also present were José Ramos-Horta and Bishop Carlos Filipe Ximenes Belo , who were awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1996 . In March 1997, East Timorese independence activists peacefully occupied the Austrian embassy in Jakarta to demonstrate against the Indonesian occupation.

Police officers from Austria took part in the United Nations Interim Administration for East Timor (UNTAET).

Austria and East Timor established diplomatic relations on October 24, 2002, five months after East Timor's independence was restored.

In 2007 the Austrian Red Cross started a project together with the Cruz Vermelha de Timor-Leste , which provided 3000 East Timorese families with clean drinking water, family latrines and hygiene training.

Entry requirements

Citizens of East Timor are exempt from visa requirements for the European Union. Austrians can also enter East Timor without a visa.

For 2016, the East Timor’s Statistical Office registered no trade relations between East Timor and Austria. In 2018, Austria exported goods worth 1,809,000 US dollars to East Timor, making it 19th among the countries of origin of East Timorese imports. A significant movement of goods from East Timor to Austria was not registered.

The singer Sandra Pires, who lives in Austria, comes from East Timor.
