The French-East Timorese relations describe the interstate relationship between France and East Timor .

history

With the Association de Solidarité avec Timor-Oriental (ASTO) , Agir Pour Timor and Les Productions du Crocodile , there were several non-governmental organizations in France that campaigned for the independence of East Timor from Indonesia . In 1999 France participated in the International Armed Forces East Timor (INTERFET).

The two countries established diplomatic relations with the independence of East Timor in 2002. East Timor's President Xanana Gusmão visited France in 2003 and 2006, Foreign Minister José Luís Guterres came in 2007. France supports East Timor primarily in the areas of the rule of law, the training of journalists and the security of government buildings.

In December 2019, several researchers gave a presentation on the cultural heritage of East Timor at the French National Assembly. The initiative came from the France-East Timor parliamentary friendship group, led by French MEP Pascale Boyer , and the France-East Tiomor Association chaired by Carlos Semedo.

About 40 people with French passports live in East Timor.

East Timor does not have a diplomatic mission in France. The East Timorese ambassador in Brussels is responsible .

The Bureau de la Coopération Française de l'Ambassade de France is located in the Casa Europa in Dili . The French embassy responsible for East Timor is located in Jakarta, Indonesia . Hervé Ladsous , the first French ambassador to East Timor, was accredited on December 6, 2002.

From 2012 to 2016, the French woman Sylvie Tabesse was the European Union's ambassador in East Timor.

economy

According to the East Timor’s Statistical Office , France exported goods worth 3,164,000 US dollars to East Timor in 2018 (2016: 396,000 US dollars). It was in 16th place (2016: 26th) in the ranking of East Timorese importers. Relevant exports from East Timor to France were not registered for 2018, but re- exports worth 8,581,000 US dollars (2016: 122,747 US dollars), which puts France in the lead.

Entry requirements

Citizens of East Timor are exempt from the visa requirement for the Schengen states . French citizens also enjoy visa-free travel in East Timor.

Sports

The Franco-Timorese Yohan Goutt Goncalves launched in 2014 in Sochi the first athlete to East Timor at the Olympic Winter Games . He also competed for East Timor at the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang .
