The Norwegian-East Timorese relations describe the intergovernmental relationship between Norway and East Timor .

history

With the Norwegian Cooperation Council on East Timor and Indonesia (NOCETI) and the Norwegian Students and Academics International Assistance Fund (SAIH) there were two non-governmental organizations in Norway that campaigned for the independence of East Timor from Indonesia . In 1996 the East Timorese José Ramos-Horta and Bishop Carlos Filipe Ximenes Belo received the Nobel Peace Prize .

Norway participated in the International Armed Forces East Timor (INTERFET), the United Nations Interim Administration for East Timor (UNTAET) and the United Nations Assistance Mission in East Timor (UNMISET). It was involved in building up the justice system in East Timor and in 2007 financed the post-transitional dialogue .

In 2003 Norway and East Timor agreed a five-year cooperation in the oil sector. Norway had already supported the Southeast Asian country beforehand in negotiations with its neighboring countries in drawing up borders and dividing up the oil fields in the Timor Sea . Aid should now follow in the institutional cooperation of the ministries in the field of oil, especially in the areas of resource, environmental and revenue management. Norwegian financial experts provided courses, seminars and training programs for advice and Norwegian lawyers helped in 2005 with the creation of the petroleum legislation. East Timor took Norway's global pension fund as a model in creating its own oil fund to finance the country once the oil fields are exhausted. The total Norwegian aid between 2002 and 2012 was worth 100 million Norwegian kroner.
