The Italian-East Timorese relations describe the interstate relationship between Italy and East Timor .

history

The Portuguese first landed on Timor in 1515 in what is now the East Timorese exclave of Oe-Cusse Ambeno . The first more precise description of the island came from the year 1522 by the Italian Antonio Pigafetta , who landed on January 26th on board the Spanish ship Victoria near Batugade and stayed for 18 days.

On December 7, 1975, Indonesia occupied East Timor, which had unilaterally declared itself independent from Portugal nine days earlier. With the Coordinamento Italiano dei Gruppi di Solidarieta con il Popolo Timorese , No Peace without Justice and the Latin American and Mediterranean Coalition for East Timor (LAMCET) there were three non-governmental organizations in Italy that campaigned for the independence of East Timor from Indonesia. Italy also participated in the International Armed Forces East Timor (INTERFET), which pacified the country after the Indonesians had left in 1999.

In 2006, East Timor's Prime Minister José Ramos-Horta and his Foreign Minister José Luís Guterres visited Italy.

It was thus in 35th place (2016: 30th place) in the ranking of importers in East Timor. Exports from East Timor to Italy were valued at US $ 254,772 in 2018 (2016: US $ 78,000). This was only 139,200 kg of coffee (2016: 30,840 kg for 58,200 US dollars). This puts Italy in 12th place among the export destinations of East Timor and 11th in coffee alone.
