history

Statue of
John Paul II in Tasitolu

In the almost exclusively Catholic East Timor, great veneration goes to the late Polish Pope John Paul II. His visit to John Paul II on October 12, 1989 in East Timor strengthened the self-confidence of the population and advanced the conflict over the Indonesian occupation of the country (1975-1999) briefly again in the consciousness of the world public. After the mass, a group of young people unfolded banners. They demonstrated for self-determination and against human rights violations. This embarrassing moment for Indonesia was followed by a wave of arrests and torture.

When John Paul II died in 2005, a three-day state mourning was declared in East Timor . A chapel with the roof of an Uma Lulik (traditional Timorese holy house) and, since 2008, a six-meter-high monumental statue of Pope John Paul II in front of the center of the Tasitolu Peace Park commemorates the visit .

The two countries established diplomatic relations with one another on November 18, 2002. The related treaty, which was signed on October 8, 2002, is the only bilateral treaty between the two countries. In 2004, the then Foreign Minister José Ramos-Horta was the first representative of East Timor to visit the Central European country. He was received by Poland's President Aleksander Kwaśniewski and the deputies of the Sejm Marshal and the Senate Marshal . The Polish State Secretary in the Ministry of Economic Affairs, Adam Szejnfeld , made a return visit to East Timor in 2008.

When Poland's President Lech Kaczyński and large parts of the Polish leadership were killed in an airplane accident in 2010 , the East Timorese government expressed its condolences.

At the celebrations for the eighth Independence Day of East Timor on May 20, 2010, Poland was represented by its former President Lech Wałęsa . From José Ramos-Horta, who had meanwhile become East Timor's President , Wałęsa received the Ordem de Timor-Leste .

In 2016 an East Timorese delegation came to Warsaw . Deputy Foreign Minister Katarzyna Kacperczyk welcomed East Timor's Deputy Foreign Minister Roberto Soares on May 12th. Soares emphasized the desire for freedom of both peoples and the common Christian values, especially with regard to John Paul II. Further meetings with representatives with the Polish ministries for economic development, sport and tourism and defense were planned.

In 2011, Poland saw therefore an export to East Timor worth 5.667 million zloty and import of goods from East Timor to the value of 2,774 zloty.

In 2015, Poland had a trade value between countries of $ 514,000. For 2016, the East Timor’s Statistical Office gave no trade relations between East Timor and Poland. In 2018, the import of aviation fuel from Poland to the value of 47,950 US dollars and re- exports to Poland to the value of 21,000 US dollars were registered.

In 2019, an agreement was signed between the Portuguese Delta Cafés and the Polish retail chain Biedronka to market the Delta Cafés (coffee) and Delta Q (coffee capsules) brands in 2900 stores. Five Delta Q capsule types contain only East Timor coffee.
