The Belgian-East Timorese relations describe the intergovernmental relationship between Belgium and East Timor .

history

With SOS Timor there was a non-governmental organization in Belgium that campaigned for the independence of East Timor from Indonesia . As early as the 1990s, the Conselho Nacional de Resistência Timorense (CNRT) had representatives from the European Union in Brussels .

In 2016 the government of East Timor Belgium expressed its condolences on the occasion of the terrorist attacks in Brussels on March 22, 2016 .

Belgium is represented in Dili by its ambassador in Jakarta . Ambassador Patrick Hermann was replaced by Stéphane de Loecker , who handed over his accreditation on February 28, 2019.

The East Timorese ambassador for Belgium is based in Brussels. On October 15th, the new embassy building in Etterbeek was inaugurated by Foreign Minister José Luís Guterres . In addition to other European countries, the ambassador is also accredited as a permanent representative of East Timor to the European Union .

Entry requirements

Citizens of East Timor are exempt from the visa requirement for the Schengen states . Belgian citizens also enjoy visa-free travel in East Timor.

There are currently around 18 East Timorese citizens living in Belgium.

economy

For 2018, the East Timorese Statistical Office registered imports from Belgium to the value of 1,020,000 US dollars (2016: 277,000 US dollars), making Belgium 22nd among the East Timorese importers. The re-exports to and from Belgium were valued at US $ 29,000 (2016: US $ 20,000). In 2016, East Timor still exported coffee worth 2,430,000 US dollars to Belgium (fourth place among the target countries). In 2018, the East Timorese statistical office recorded no exports to Belgium.
