The intergovernmental relationship between Bangladesh and Austria is referred to as Bangladeshi-Austrian relations . Relations between the two countries can be described as friendly. Both countries are in the process of strengthening this connection.

history

Due to the long distance (between the two capitals Dhaka and Vienna there are almost 7000 kilometers as the crow flies), the contacts between the two countries have been rather small in the course of history. Bangladesh never played a significant role in Asia and Austria, although very powerful under the rule of the Habsburgs within Europe, focused on continental affairs and never became a colonial empire.

Despite the good relations and mutual agreement on various international issues, there was only a minimum of bilateral contacts between the two countries until the mid-1990s. On February 4, 1972, Austria recognized Bangladesh as an independent state. In 1990 the Austrian Foreign Minister and Vice Chancellor Alois Mock visited Bangladesh. In 1992, a delegation from the Austrian Chamber of Commerce followed. In the late 1990s and early 2000s, there were several mutual visits at State Secretary level. Economic talks in April 1997 under the direction of Josef Mayer from the Ministry of Economic Affairs led to a gradual expansion of economic relations between the two countries. Further bilateral business talks followed in 2000. In February 2013, the Bangladeshi Foreign Minister Dipu Moni visited Vienna as part of his participation in the “5th Global Forum of the Alliance of Civilizations of the United Nations ”. There was a bilateral meeting with Foreign Minister Michael Spindelegger and Chamber of Commerce President Christoph Leitl as well as members of the Parliament's Foreign Affairs Committee. The Bangladeshi Foreign Minister Abdul Hassan Mahmood Ali met Foreign Ministers Sebastian Kurz and Christoph Leitl in Vienna in 2016 . In 2017 the 136th IPU conference took place in Dhaka. From Austria, the members of the National Council Reinhold Lopatka (ÖVP), Andreas Karlsböck (FPÖ), Gabriela Moser (Greens) and Petra Bayer (SPÖ) took part. In 2017, the Bangladeshi Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina Wajed came to Vienna to take part in the international conference of the IAEA. During the conference, there was a bilateral meeting with the Austrian Federal President Alexander Van der Bellen and Federal Chancellor Christian Kern .
