Wolfgang A. Waldner (born October 6, 1954 in Villach ) is an Austrian politician ( ÖVP ), diplomat and cultural manager . From April 2011 to August 2012 he was State Secretary in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and from September 2012 to May 2014 the provincial government in the Carinthian provincial governments villagers II and Emperor I . From January 2016 to October 2019, Waldner was Ambassador of the Republic of Austria to the United States at the Embassy in Washington, DC

Life

Waldner studied law and Romance studies ( Italian and French ) at the University of Vienna from 1973 to 1979 and graduated with a doctorate in law (Dr. iur.). He is a member of the Catholic Academic Association Norica Vienna in the Cartell Association .

From 1983 to 1987 Waldner was cultural attaché at the Austrian embassy in Washington, DC and then personal secretary to Foreign Minister Alois Mock . From 1988 to 1999 he headed the Austrian Cultural Forum New York in New York City . There he founded the magazine Austria Kultur, among other things . Since 1995 he has been a board member of Friends of Austrian Culture . In 1998 he was campaign manager Thomas Klestils when he successfully ran for the federal presidential election . From 1999 to 2011 Waldner was managing director of the Vienna MuseumsQuartier .

In April 2011 he was appointed State Secretary in the Foreign Ministry by Foreign Minister Michael Spindelegger ; in particular, he should oversee the agendas of international cultural relations. In August 2012 it was announced that Waldner will succeed the resigned Achill Rumpold as regional councilor in Carinthia. As such, he was sworn in on September 3rd. From March 28, 2013 was Waldner administrator for commerce, agriculture, forestry, tourism, culture and communities in the state government Emperor I . On May 6, 2014, Waldner resigned as member of the regional council, followed by Christian Benger . Waldner then headed the Austrian embassy in Budapest as chargé d'affaires before taking over the cultural and political section at the headquarters of the Foreign Office in Vienna. From January 2016 to October 2019 Waldner represented Austria as ambassador in Washington, DC

He is a brother of the ORF presenter Gabi Waldner .
