Austrian Natural Law Party

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Austrian Natural Law Party is a political party founded in Austria in 1992 that expects Maharishi's ideas of Transcendental Meditation to have a positive impact on society. According to the party program, training only 1,000 people to become “yogic pilots” would lead to a significant reduction in crime, the frequency of accidents and unemployment, as well as a noticeable relief for the state budget.

The churches and the federal government warned against the party and pointed out its proximity to the Transcendental Meditation , which they call a "sect" . In newspaper articles, the ÖNP (which advocates a clear separation of church and state institutions) was described as the “political arm of a guru”. The ÖNP stood in the National Council elections in 1994 and 1995 as well as in some state elections (e.g. Upper Austria 1997 : 879 votes; Styria 2000 : 1555 votes), but never managed to win a mandate.

The ÖNP achieved its best result so far in an election in the municipal council elections in 1995 in Spital am Semmering , where a share of the vote of 6.02% was not enough for a place on the council.
