The state elections in Upper Austria in 1997 took place on October 5, 1997, and the Austrian People's Party (ÖVP) was able to maintain its top position. Nonetheless, the ÖVP lost 2.5 percentage points and one mandate, and with a 42.7% share of the vote, 25 out of 56 MPs. The Social Democratic Party of Austria (SPÖ) lost even more than the ÖVP, losing 4.4 percentage points and three mandates. For the SPÖ, a share of 27.0% of the vote and 16 seats meant the worst election result to date in a state election in Upper Austria in the Second Republic. One of the election winners, on the other hand, was the Freedom Party of Austria (FPÖ), which posted a plus of 2.9 percentage points and won an additional mandate. With 20.6%, the best result so far by the FPÖ Upper Austria, she provided twelve mandataries in the Upper Austrian state parliament for the first time. The second election winner was Die Grünen - Die Grüne Alternative , who entered the Upper Austrian state parliament for the first time with 5.8%. The Greens were able to gain 2.7 percentage points compared to 1991 and entered the state parliament with three mandataries. The six other parties that ran in 1997 clearly failed to make it into the state parliament, with the Liberal Forum achieving the best result of these lists with 2.1%.
