His artistic talent was discovered very early on and encouraged by his parents. He was a student of Gustav Schönleber , who taught at the academy in Karlsruhe . In 1900 the painter moved to Dachau in order to be able to paint “ plein-air ”, that is, under the open sky in the famous moss . In his new home he had a slightly Baroque style villa built that still exists today. August Pfaltz, a close friend of Hermann Stockmann , was an active contributor to the establishment of the Dachau district museum. There are still numerous models of old farmhouses, house and garden doors.

The artist was buried in the old Dachau cemetery. His Biedermeier grave is still preserved. A street in Dachau was named after him.
