Austrian Music Council

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Austrian Music Council (Austrian Music Council, short: ÖMR) is part of the International Music Council (IMC) associated with UNESCO - which sees itself as the "voice of the music of the world", as the umbrella organization of music-related NGOs - and thus also a member of European Music Council (EMC). The aim of the ÖMR as an interest group for music in Austria is the coordination and networking of those who work in and with music, as well as the deepening and promotion of the diversity of music from Austria.

basis

In its work, the ÖMR refers to the fundamental rights regarding music (Five Music Rights) defined by the International Music Council:

  1. All children and adults have the right to express themselves musically with complete freedom
  2. All children and adults have the right to learn musical expressions and skills
  3. All children and adults have the right to access musical activities: to participate, to listen, to create music and to receive information
  4. Music makers have the right to develop as artists and the right to communicate in all media by having adequate facilities at their disposal
  5. Music makers have the right to adequate recognition and remuneration for their work

Members of the ÖMR are organizations and individuals with music-political objectives: music education associations, collecting societies, organizations for composers and performers, interest groups for musicians, orchestras, organizers, amateur music associations, training institutions and people from the Austrian musical life of all genres and styles.

history

The ÖMR was founded in 1956 at the Vienna Music Academy (today: University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna ) and registered as an association in 1959. The first President of the Austrian Music Council was the Austrian composer Gottfried von Eine (1959–1962), followed by Hans Sittner (1962–1983), Gottfried Scholz (1983–1991), Wilfried Scheib (1991–1996), Franz Welser-Möst (1996 –2000) and Harald Ossberger (2000–2006). The musician and musicologist Harald Huber has been President of the ÖMR since 2006 and runs the organization together with the cultural manager Günther Wildner (Secretary General) and the composer Paul Hertel (Chairman of the Board of Trustees). The head office is in Vienna.
