Özhan Canaydın
Özhan Canaydın (born January 23, 1943 in Bursa , † March 22, 2010 ibid) was a Turkish basketball player , entrepreneur and sports official at Galatasaray Istanbul .
Canaydın became the youngest member of Galatasaray Istanbul in 1957 at the age of 14. He later played for the youth and professional team of the Galatasarays basketball department. In 1962 Özhan Canaydın took part in the European Championship with the Turkish national team and in 1963 he was Turkish basketball champion with Galatasaray.
After retiring in 1964, he founded his own textile company in Bursa. The 20 hectare factory mainly produces clothing for well-known brands. Özhan Canaydın held various positions at Galatasaray Istanbul during the tenure of Ali Tanrıyar , Alp Yalman and Faruk Süren . In 2002 he was elected President of Galatasaray. He won the election with 3,479 votes against Mehmet Cansun , who received 2,089 votes. After his first election success, two more terms followed. During his tenure, the club won two football championships and the Turkish Cup. He was also responsible for the construction of Galatasaray's new home, the Türk Telekom Arena . Canaydın was best known for his fair and exemplary behavior and was therefore also respected by the opposing fans.
In 2008 he announced that he was not standing for election because he had pancreatic cancer . On March 22, 2010, Özhan Canaydın died as a result of his consequences in the Acibadem Hospital in Bursa.
