Julien Bryan
Julien Hequembourg Bryan (born May 23, 1899 in Titusville , † October 20, 1974 in New York ) was an American documentary filmmaker.
Life
The greatest notoriety gained his films about everyday life in the German Empire at the time of National Socialism (see March of Time: Inside Nazi Germany ), Poland and the Soviet Union between 1935 and 1939. After the start of World War II , he produced several films about the siege of Warsaw by the Wehrmacht in September 1939. He is considered the only foreign journalist who was in the Polish capital at the time. On the Polish radio , he appealed to US President Franklin Delano Roosevelt to help the civilian population of Warsaw who were suffering from the German air raids. His documentary Siege (1940) was nominated for an Oscar in the category “Best Short Film” and in 2006 was included in the National Film Registry as “a unique, harrowing document of the cruel brutality of war” .
