× Chitalpa tashkentensis is the only species of the Nothogus × Chitalpa . It is a horticultural crossing. The large shrub combines the decorative properties and the long flowering time of Chilopsis linearis with the resilience of Catalpa bignonioides . × Chitalpa tashkentensis has a high decorative value and flowers in Uzbekistan from April until the first frost. In the botanical garden "FN Rusanov" in Tashkent it is called "Chilokatalpa".

description

Inflorescence and leaves of the 'Pink Dawn' cultivar.

× Chitalpa tashkentensis is an ornamental shrub that reaches heights of 4 to 6 meters and a diameter of up to 8 meters in Central Asia . The wood can have one or more trunks. The bark is thin and gray-brown. The crown has a spreading shape. The dark green leaves are lanceolate with a length of up to 22 centimeters and a width of 4 to 5 centimeters. Several flowers stand together in a panicle inflorescence that is 12 to 20 centimeters long. The flower crowns are pink (in the 'Pink Dawn' variety) or white (in the 'Morning Cloud' variety) and show 1 millimeter thick purple longitudinal stripes in the throat and finely speckled purple dots on a yellowish background.

× Chitalpa tashkentensis 'Pink Dawn'.
× Chitalpa tashkentensis 'Morning Cloud'.

Botanical history

Nikolai Fjodorowitsch Rusanow , the son of the founder of the Botanical Garden, succeeded in crossing Catalpa bignonioides with Chilopsis linearis in 1962 . He pollinated them one another. It has been shown that pollinated Chilopsis linearis flowers give a useful result. A total of seven hybrids were created. Two of them were white-flowered, the other five pink-flowered. It can be assumed that from these seven all other × chitalpa emerged.

use

× Chitalpa tashkentensis has excellent decorative properties and is suitable for planting in parks and gardens. It works as a solitaire and in groups. Thanks to its narrow leaves, it appears filigree and translucent.

× Chitalpa tashkentensis can be planted in the continental climate in the temperate zones of the world. The large shrub loves the sun and is quite undemanding on the ground . In Tashkent it survived temperatures down to −15 ° C. It recovers quite well after periods of frost and blooms again in spring. For better flowering next spring, pruning is recommended in autumn. With vegetative propagation, it blooms after one to two years.
