The Convention for the Protection of the Mediterranean Sea against Pollution ( English Barcelona Convention for Protection against Pollution in the Mediterranean Sea ) was founded in 1976 by 14 countries and the European Union in Barcelona signed and is therefore also known as the Barcelona Convention and Barcelona Convention respectively. The set of rules came into force on February 12, 1978 and was revised in 1995 and signed again by all contractual partners.

The Convention, together with its protocols and the Mediterranean Action Plan, is part of the Regional Seas Program of the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP) .

aims

The Barcelona Convention aims to prevent or curb pollution of the Mediterranean by air and shipping traffic and by facilities on the mainland. The focus is on dumping , waste water discharge and pollutant infiltration. The undersigned agree to cooperate in monitoring and research in the event of an emergency threatening the environment and to provide mutual assistance.

The protocols

The implementation of the Barcelona takes place primarily through several protocols:

  • Protocol for the Prevention of Pollution of the Mediterranean by Discharge by Ships and Aircraft
  • Protocol on cooperation in the fight against pollution of the Mediterranean by oil and other pollutants in an emergency
  • Protocol on the Protection of the Mediterranean from Land-based Pollution
  • Protocol on the Special Protection Areas and the Biodiversity of the Mediterranean
  • Protocol on cooperation in the prevention of pollution from ships and in the fight against pollution of the Mediterranean in an emergency
  • Protocol on Integrated Coastal Zone Management in the Mediterranean

Contracting States

Albania , Algeria , Bosnia-Herzegovina , Cyprus , Croatia , Egypt , Spain , France , Greece , Israel , Italy , Lebanon , Libya , Malta , Morocco , Monaco , Montenegro , Slovenia , Syria , Tunisia , Turkey and the European Community have the convention signed. However, the ratification status of the individual protocols varies greatly from country to country.
