history

At the time of construction, the Üblacker-Häusl was one of numerous simple residential buildings for day laborers around Preysingstrasse in Haidhausen, at that time an eastern suburb of Munich. Of the numerous, mostly one or two-story houses, only a few have survived today; most of them have been replaced by multi-storey apartment buildings. In 1894 the hostel became the property of the timber and coal merchant Johann Üblacker for a high price for the time. The description at that time was "House with attached stables, toilet, protective roof, carriage shed and courtyard". The city of Munich acquired the building from Üblacker's heirs in 1966. Due to its poor condition, it was then to be canceled, but the Au-Haidhausen district committee prevented this. After the last residents moved out in 1974, the Üblacker-Häusl was added to the list of monuments, renovated for more than half a million DM from 1977 and finally opened on July 12, 1980. Since then, there has been an apartment on the upper floor, and the Üblacker Hostel Museum has been set up on the ground floor. In two rooms designed as living rooms and bedrooms, it shows the life of a day laborer family. The museum has loans from the Munich City Museum . Another room, the former goat barn, is used by the Friends of Haidhausen Association, founded in 1978 - Verein für Haidhausen e. V. used for exhibitions and events.
