List of museums in Munich
The list of museums in Munich gives an overview of the museum landscape in Munich .
introduction
Munich is one of the most important museum locations in German-speaking countries. Several internationally renowned collections and museums have their headquarters there. These include, for example, the Pinakothek der Moderne , which opened in 2002 , the largest new museum building in Munich since the Neue Pinakothek opened in the early 1980s, and the German Museum, the largest technology museum in the world. The main building of the Deutsches Museum on Museum Island is also by far the most popular museum in Munich with around one million visitors a year.
In addition to the large, mostly state institutions, various small museums enrich Munich's cultural landscape, some of which deal with Munich customs and history. So that illuminates Beer and Oktoberfest Museum , the history of the Munich breweries and the year on the Theresienwiese held Oktoberfest . The hostel museum in Haidhausen deals with the housing situation of the population of the district in the 18th century.
Most of the museums are financed by the public purse, especially by the Free State of Bavaria and the City of Munich. But there are also a number of museums that are run by private individuals, companies or foundations. The most important of these facilities include the Valentin-Karlstadt-Musäum in the Isartor , the Goetz Collection in Oberföhring , the MVG Museum in the former main tram workshop in the Ramersdorf district, as well as the BMW company museum and the Alpine Museum of the German Alpine Association .
The term "museum" is not protected in Germany and its use is not regulated by law. The term “museum” can be used by the owners of collections or exhibitions as they see fit. The International Council of Museums defines a museum as "a non-profit, permanent, public institution [...] that acquires, preserves, researches, publishes and exhibits material evidence of people and their environment for study, educational and entertainment purposes". Accordingly, this list only includes institutions that have their own collections and exhibit them in a way that is accessible to the public. Pure exhibition venues such as the Haus der Kunst , the art gallery of the Hypo-Kulturstiftung or the Lothringer13 , which only exhibit works that are not owned by the institution, are not listed.
