Live and act

Erwin von Kreibig grew up as one of three children of mathematician Arthur von Kreibig in the Munich district of Schwabing, which is known for its art scene . From 1913 he attended a boarding school and from 1919 trained as a chaser. From 1921 he graduated from the Munich School of Applied Arts , where he was taught by Richard Riemerschmid , among others . He then worked with his one year older brother Erich (1903–1989) for the “United Workshops” and “German Workshops” in Munich. The success reached as far as the USA, where they supplied the most famous gallery owners in New York's Fifth Avenue until the 1930s. In addition, Erwin von Kreibig worked as a freelance artist and worked a. a. for the magazines Simplicissimus , Jugend and Eulenspiegel .

Although Erwin von Kreibig, who belonged to the “jury-free” group, was able to exhibit paintings and graphics in the legendary Munich Glass Palace several times , the economic success was modest. In 1932 his brother Erich married a South African woman of German descent. A travel grant from the city of Munich enabled Erwin von Kreibig to stay in Paris in 1932, where some of his best works were created in his studio on Montparnasse. In 1933 he moved to Ibiza , but returned to Munich in 1936 because of the outbreak of the Spanish Civil War . The National Socialists have now classified his art as " degenerate ". Since he was deprived of his livelihood in Munich, he and his sister Amanda (1903–1989) stayed in Sanremo until 1952 after a stay in South Tyrol (Gandegg Castle). In 1952 he returned to Munich. On a trip to Kenya (1956), impressive paintings were created again. Shortly before his death in 1961, he received the Schwabing Art Prize for Painting, which was awarded for the first time, by the City of Munich , which he could no longer accept in person.

His brother Erich, who was able to secure a large part of his work during Erwin von Kreibig's lifetime, dedicated himself to the preservation and collection of Erwin’s works. In addition to organizing exhibitions and publishing a book, this included the establishment of the Erwin von Kreibig Foundation in 1989. This foundation opened the Erwin von Kreibig Museum on September 23, 1991 in the southern roundabout No. 1 Nymphenburg . There, the works of Erwin von Kreibig as well as temporary exhibitions with works by other artists are shown in a permanent exhibition.
