Eduard von Riedel (born February 1, 1813 in Bayreuth- Riedelsberg, † August 24, 1885 in Starnberg ) was a German architect and Bavarian construction officer .

Life

Riedel was the son of the royal Bavarian district and government architect Karl Christian Riedel and his wife Anna Marianna Eleonora (nee Tretzel, † October 12, 1844). He first studied architecture in Bayreuth, then at the art academy in Munich . In 1834 he passed his final examination in architecture and received a scholarship that enabled him to travel to Italy in 1839/40. In 1842 he married Antonie Mohr, who came from Mannheim . After completing his studies, he took over the management of the new building for the women's monastery on Ludwigstrasse, after which he built the residence and palace garden for King Otto of Greece in Athens . He was court architect until 1850, after which he moved to Munich, where he completed the Propylaea together with Leo von Klenze . From 1852 to 1857 Riedel was a professor at the Polytechnic. In 1853 he was appointed Hofbauinspektor and in 1872 he became head of the Hofbauintendanz and royal court building director.

The works of the master builder, who designed buildings in the Hellenistic, Moorish, Romanesque, Gothic and Renaissance styles, include the Wolfram von Eschenbach monument in Eschenbach , numerous fountains in the Schleissheim palace gardens, the Munich civil service relics institute , the Bavarian National Museum and numerous plans , among other things for the Cistercian monastery Mehrerau near Bregenz, a new university and a new mint building in Munich. He was also responsible for the restoration of numerous castles. His most important work was probably the design for Neuschwanstein Castle on behalf of King Ludwig II.

The painter August Riedel was his brother.
