Karl Christian Riedel (born on May 2, 1764 at the Hermitage in Bayreuth , died on December 27, 1838 there ) was a German architect , painter and princely land and building inspector.

Life

Riedel was the son of the architect and court building inspector Johann Gottlieb Riedel and his wife Christina Eleonora Carolina (née Büttner). Like his older brothers Heinrich August and Heinrich Karl Riedel , he was inclined to pursue a career in engineering. The first lessons were designed in this direction, but his father decided to teach him civil and agricultural art as well as architecture from the age of 11. This was followed by training in oil , pastel and water color painting , which focused on portraits and landscapes. In 1778, at the age of 14, he was hired as a construction manager in Bayreuth. Here he used the opportunity to perfect his skills. The prince sent him to Dresden on February 23, 1786 to study at the academy and then on to Berlin. Here he was able to undertake a few business trips with his brothers through the Mark Brandenburg and as far as Pomerania. Then he stayed in Magdeburg, moved on through the Braunschweigische Land and via Hesse, the Rhineland, Strasbourg and Nancy to Paris. Here he studied architecture, sculpture, painting and mathematics at the academy with Gabriel Pierre Martin Dumont . He had to break off the trip before he could start a longer trip to Italy and England, as planned. After a short stay in London, he returned to Bayreuth early. Most of his return journey in 1789 had to be made on foot. He received the order to make a drawing for a madhouse and a bathhouse and then to build both. On October 30, 1790, he was employed as an agricultural inspector in Anspach and later in Bayreuth. The appointment as the real building inspector of the Principality of Bayreuth took place on January 30, 1793. On February 2, 1796 he received the official confirmation, along with an increase in his salary.
