St. Aegidius

St. Aegidius is an Evangelical Lutheran church in Eckersdorf named after St. Aegidius .

The origin of the church is a castle chapel, which was dedicated to St. Kilian . Their exact age cannot be determined. In 1457 the brothers Walter and Michael Rabenstein had the chapel renovated and painted with frescoes. During a restoration in 1983/87 these paintings were partially exposed again. The four symbols of the evangelists can be seen on the ceiling, while the Eckersdorf Castle, which still existed at the time, is shown on the walls. The takeover of the castle by the Plassenbergers from the Rabensteiners is also symbolically recorded: a heraldic point is set on the castle tower as part of the Plassenberg coat of arms symbol, on which a raven (symbol of the Rabensteiner) spreads its wings to fly away. Furthermore, representations of the Saints Aegidius and Barbara can be seen .

In 1526 Lorenz von Plassenberg added a nave to the chapel. It has been a parish church since 1527. In 1673 it received a new baptismal font, which has been preserved to this day, and in 1677 a new pulpit. In 1695 an upper floor of the tower was added, which was built by Johann Jakob Weiß. A major renovation took place in the 1790s. The nave was built by Carl Christian Riedel with a gallery building based on the Bayreuth scheme. The stucco of the nave ceiling comes from Rudolf Albini .

Extensive renovation work was carried out in 1992/93 and 2000/01.

On April 1, 2009, the formerly independent parishes of St. Peter and Paul (Busbach) and John the Baptist (Neustädtlein am Forst) were incorporated into the parish of St. Agidius.
