tasks

Promotion of cultural education

The promotion of a (young) art audience is also a central task of the Artothek. It takes place in such a way that it arouses and promotes interest in art through the possibility of borrowing works of art . The openness to new art is growing, as modern exhibits can be taken home to let them work there. At the same time, the exchange with others (e.g. visitors or friends) about art and culture promotes openness for and discussion about modern art. If a user of the Münchner Artothek wishes to buy a picture himself, the Munich Artothek enables studio visits to the respective artist and encourages them to buy.

Artist funding

The Munich Artothek has an annual budget with which it buys works of art. An acquisition commission decides which works of art should be acquired. In addition to some city councils, it consists mainly of Munich's artistic personalities. The focus of the funding is on young graduates from the Munich Art Academy , but also established artists from the Munich region, who are often internationally known. The Munich Artothek now has an extensive art collection with around 1,500 works from a wide variety of trends.

Municipal gallery

Dealing with art and talking about art are also promoted as part of a varied gallery program. Based on the idea of supporting the regional art scene, the Artothek, as a municipal gallery, mainly presents art from the Munich area.

The openness to all styles is also reflected in the exhibitions: the rooms of the Artothek are used for solo exhibitions or themed exhibitions with several artists, whereby pictures from the exhibition are often acquired later for the collection.

For some time now, themed exhibitions have been combined with readings in order to allow the visual arts and literature to enter into a dialogue. In this way, the Munich Artothek promotes the exchange between sculptors , photographers , painters and writers as well as between different audience groups who are usually more interested in art or more in literature.
