The Þorskafjörður (dt. Dorschfjord ) is a fjord in western Iceland .

Geography and traffic

This fjord is a northern side fjord of Breiðafjörður in the south of the Westfjords . It extends 16 km into the country and is up to 1.5 km wide. The Gufufjörður and Djúpifjörður branches off at the Ford entrance . The isthmus between Berufjörður in the south and Þorskafjörður in the north is almost 3 km wide. South of Þorskafjörður is the Reykjanes peninsula .

Around the inner part of the fjord, 12 km of Vestfjarðavegur runs S60 through the southwest to Ísafjörður . There are studies as to whether and how the course of the road can be improved in this area. Þorskafjarðarvegur branches off right inside innenorskafjörður T608. It leads 23 km north over the Þorskafjarðarheiði to Djúpvegur S61 , the main connection to Ísafjörður.

history

The Þorskfirðinga saga ( Gull-Þóris saga ) refers to the Þorskafjörður.

In Þorskafjörður is the now uninhabited Skógar farm . Matthías Jochumsson , poet of the Icelandic national anthem and plays, was born here in 1835 .
