Two- axle diesel railcars of the former Czechoslovak State Railways (ČSD) for traffic on main and branch lines were designated as ČSD series M 242.0 .

history

After the success of the two-axle tower cars from Tatra Kopřivnice , ČKD in Prague also developed corresponding vehicles for the ČSD. The design of the railcars was similar to the ČSD series M 222.0 vehicles manufactured by Škoda in Pilsen in 1932 . Between 1933 and 1940, a total of 68 railcars in 7 series were delivered to the ČSD and BMB-ČMD .

Only a few vehicles in the series survived the Second World War . With the commissioning of the new M 131.1 class railcars , these gradually became superfluous and were taken out of service by 1958. Some cars were converted into sidecars. No vehicle from the M 242.0 series has been preserved in a museum.

technical features

The railcars were equipped with an underfloor eight-cylinder diesel engine from ČKD in a boxer arrangement. The power was transferred electrically to both axles. The technical parameters in the sketch refer to the 4th series cars from 1936 (numbers 27–40). When comparing the individual series there were several differences; the engines of the first series had an output of 130 hp; later it was increased to 150, 160, 180 and up to 200 hp. There were also several differences in the power transfer. The main characteristics of the main generator and traction motors changed with each delivery. It is also no longer possible to trace which vehicles were equipped with electrical power transmission according to the ČKD-RM system or the ČKD-RV system.

The car body of the first series corresponded to that of the ČSD series M 232.1 and had an axle base of 6.2 m. The bevels on the driver's cab side with the wheel base of 7.0 m did not appear until the second series. The production of the car bodies also changed several times; the bodies of cars no. 34–40 from the 4th series and no. 52–61 (complete 5th series) were produced by Vagonka Studénka , the car bodies no. 41–51 by Královopolská . There is no evidence of the other car bodies.

The M 242.026 railcar showed the greatest change. It was diesel-hydraulic with a Lysholm-Smith type coupling. To start up, it worked like a hydrodynamic coupling. After reaching a certain speed, the driver switched on a mechanical transmission stage. The transmission unit then acted like a mechanical gearbox on an axle.
