The class T 444.0 (from 1988: class 725 ) was one of the few diesel-hydraulic locomotives operated by the Czechoslovak State Railways ČSD. It was developed to replace steam operation on branch lines and in shunting services.

history

The first two prototypes were delivered by ČKD in Prague in 1959 . Series production took place at Turčianske strojarne n. P. Martin in Slovakia . A total of 113 machines were delivered for ČSD and 61 for industrial companies.

The locomotives, known as “Karkulka” (German: Little Red Riding Hood) because of their red paint, had a reduction converter for mainline and shunting service. The T 444.1 series with a steam boiler for heating the car was derived from them. This reduced the fuel reserve from 4000 l to 1500 l.

In 1988 it was redesignated as the 725 series. Since the locomotives did not have a steam boiler and freight traffic on branch lines was continuously declining, their services could be dispensed with until 1992. Quite a few machines have been kept running.
