The locomotive of the ČSD series T 678.0 (from 1988: series 775 ) was developed as a further development of the proven series T 435.0 . It was designed for freight traffic, at the same time an identical machine from the ČSD series T 679.0 for passenger traffic was also created. Both types of locomotive were intended for service on mountain routes to replace the steam locomotives there.
history
In 1961, ČKD produced 2 prototypes each of the T 678.0 as a freight locomotive and the T 679.0 series with a train heater as a passenger locomotive. 15 series locomotives were delivered by 1964. They were given an orange coat of paint, which soon earned them the nickname “Pomaranč” (German: Orange).
Although the locomotives had the considerable continuous pulling force of 245 kN, no other machines of this type were procured. Instead, the T 679.1 series imported from the Soviet Union was procured from 1966, as was the case with the Deutsche Reichsbahn , MAV and PKP .
Scheduled use ended with the 1996/1997 timetable change. The T 678.012 has been preserved as an operational museum locomotive in the Zvolen depot, the T 678.016 is not operational in Bratislava. A copy of the T 679.0 series was also preserved .
technical features
Like their predecessors, the locomotives were diesel-electric with tatzlager motors. They received highly charged engines from ČKD with a nominal power of 1472 kW. Since the engines did not prove themselves and were very prone to failure, engines with 1325 kW were used for the series locomotives.
commitment
The T 678.0 series locomotives were initially assigned to the Praha-Libeň , Zvolen , Olomouc and Plzeň depots . Apparently the locomotives were unsuitable for the winding mountain routes in Bohemia; later their area of operation was then concentrated on the Zvolen depot. However, the locomotives proved themselves over many years on the demanding hilly routes of central Slovakia .
