The ČSD series T 679.0 (from 1988: series 776 ) is a diesel-electric locomotive of the former Czechoslovak state railway ČSD for heavy passenger and freight train service.

history

The locomotive was developed parallel to the T 678.0 series and is largely identical to it. In contrast to this series, however, they received a steam boiler for train heating for use in passenger train traffic. To accommodate this, the tank volume was reduced from 6000 to 3500 liters.

This type made it possible to replace the steam locomotives in passenger train service on mountain routes.

27 machines had been delivered by 1964. The deployment took place from the depots in Praha-Libeň , Plzeň , Zvolen and Vrútky . These machines were also given an orange paint, which earned them the nickname “Pomeranč” (German: Orange).

No further copies of these machines were procured either. When they were built, they and the T 678.0 were the strongest and fastest diesel locomotives of the ČSD . ČKD also supplied locomotives of the T 679.0 series to Iraq. The locomotives have proven themselves over many years on the demanding mountain routes.

When the timetable changed in 1996/1997, their scheduled use ended. The T 679.019 has been preserved as a museum locomotive in the Bratislava Vychod depot. A copy of the T 678.0 series was also preserved .
