Čedomil Šilić (born February 4, 1937 in Sarajevo ; † October 21, 2010 ibid) was a Yugoslav and Bosnian botanist. Its botanical author's abbreviation is "Šilić".

Life

Šilić was born on February 4, 1937 in Sarajevo, where he also completed his school education. In Banja Luka , he enrolled at the Forest Middle School, which he graduated in 1956. He then enrolled at the Sarajevo Forestry Faculty, where he graduated in 1963. After completing his studies, he worked in the botanical garden of the Bosnian Museum of Natural History. He also found his position in life in the Natural History Museum, where he remained until 1996.

Šilić did his doctorate in 1974 in Ljubljana in a monograph on the genera Satureja , Calamintha , Micromeria , Acinos and Clinopodium ( Monografija rodova Satureja L., Calamintha Miller, Micromeria Bentham, Acinos Miller i Clinopodium L. u flori Jugoslavije ) on the territory of Yugoslavia. He was considered an excellent expert on the flora of the Dinarides in general and the Lamiaceae in particular. He has added 36 new species to the flora of Yugoslavia , for which, as with Satureja horvatii, an endemic species in Orjen is also recognized by revisions.

Works

The numerous monographs of Šilić both in the scientific and botanical environment as well as the popular natural works of the series of the Priroda Jugoslavije (German: Nature of Yugoslavia) have achieved importance. This made Šilić's name familiar to a non-botanically pre-educated layer. In his specialization as a monograph of complex groups of the Lamiaceae, he described numerous new (sub) species and varieties.
