The Červené blato bog

Červené blato (German red moss ) is a bog and a national nature reserve in the Czech Republic . It is located on the edge of the Třeboňsko Protected Landscape Area , about six kilometers southwest of the town of Suchdol nad Lužnicí . The area lies on the border of the districts of České Budějovice and Jindřichův Hradec and belongs to the towns of Nové Hrady and Suchdol nad Lužnicí and to the municipality of Petříkov .

In Červené blato, peat has been mined for the nearby glassworks in the Jiříkovo Údolí settlement since 1774 . The dismantling ended in 1910 when the glassworks closed. In 1953 the moor was declared a reserve on 39.4 hectares. The reserve was expanded to 331 hectares in 1973.

The whole area is traversed by a network of canals and ditches that were set up for drainage in the years 1810–1812 . As part of the protection plan, the drainage system will be isolated so that the water remains in the area and the landscape retains the character of a tundra . The peat layer is 7.6 meters thick and on average three meters deep. The moor is predominantly overgrown with moor spirits (Pinus rotundata) , which are up to 200 years old. The herb layer consists of swamp porst , scabbard cottongrass , blueberries and cranberries . The common cranberry grows in some places , and some rare species such as the round-leaved sundew can be found here.

Access to the reserve is on the road between Nové Hrady and Třeboň . At the Jiříkovo Údolí settlement there is a junction to the right and a small parking lot. The area is only accessible on a marked path that was established in 1983. In damp and unsafe places, the path is paved in the form of a boardwalk , which underlines the impression of a Nordic tundra.
