Đorđe Balašević ( Serbian - Cyrillic Ђорђе Балашевић ; born May 11, 1953 in Novi Sad , Yugoslavia ) is a Serbian songwriter from the former Yugoslavia.

Career

After membership in the bands Žetva (German: harvest ) and Rani mraz (German: early frost ), he started his solo career in the early 1980s.

Balašević's lyrics range from love songs to humorous to political content. While “Računajte na nas” (reckon with us, 1978 ) called for engagement within the political system of Yugoslavia that he fundamentally advocated (the band Pankrti responded with the song “Ne računajte na nas” (do not reckon with us)), he warns in "Samo da rata ne bude" (Only that there was no war there, 1987 ) criticized "Bluz za Bracu Slovence" (Blues for the Slovenian brothers, before a possible war and 1991 ) the independence aspirations of Slovenia . Both in his songs and in interviews, Balašević criticized the nationalists in all Yugoslav republics and successor states. In 2000 he took part in the protests against Slobodan Milošević , which led to his overthrow.

His most successful songs include For example, the single “U razdeljak te ljubim” (I kiss your head), recorded with the band Žetva, sold 180,000 times in Yugoslavia . Other songs composed and sung by him such as “Priča o Vasi Ladačkom” (The story about Vasa Ladački), “Lepa protina kći” (The priest's beautiful daughter), “Pesma o jednom petlu” (A song about a rooster) and others. a. have gone down in Serbian and Yugoslav music history. Some of his songs, such as the popular "Tri put sam video Tita" (I've seen Tito 3 times), are classified as Yugoslav nostalgic.

Musically he orientates himself u. a. in French and Italian chansons and made the term Kantautor (from the Italian Cantautore ) popular in the former Yugoslavia. He composed two albums that were recorded almost exclusively with acoustic instruments and that are heavily inspired by the folk music of Vojvodina .

Balašević wrote, among other things, two novels that were well received by critics and directed his film "Kao rani mraz" ("Like an early frost"). He is married and has two daughters and a son.
