İlhami Sancar

İlhami Sancar (* 1909 in the Gördes district , † December 13, 1986 in Istanbul ) was a Turkish politician. In the 1970s he was his country's defense minister several times .

Life

İlhami Sancar was born in İlçe Gördes near Manisa in 1909 . He attended elementary school in Kemalpaşa and high school in Izmir . He then studied law at the Ankara University . After graduating in 1933, he worked as a judge.

At the end of the 1940s he retired from the service and became a member of the Cumhuriyet Halk Partisi (CHP). In 1949 he became chairman of the Istanbul Party Office. On January 24, 1961, he became a member of the constituent assembly that was convened after the military coup in Turkey in 1960 to draft a new constitution. From 1961 to 1969 he was CHP MP for Istanbul in the Grand National Assembly of Turkey .

After Cumhuriyetçi Güven Partisi split off from the CHP in 1967, İlhami Sancar left the party and became a member of the CGP. In the next two legislative periods between 1969 and 1977 Sancar sat for the CGP in parliament.

Sancar was Minister of Defense five times. Between 1961 and 1965 he was a member of the 26th, 27th and 28th Governments of Turkey under Ismet Inönü as a CHP member, and from 1973 to 1975, with a brief interruption, as a CGP member, he was Defense Minister of the 36th and 38th governments.
