Erdost took up a job after primary school. After moving to Ankara with his brother Muzaffer Erdost , he found the opportunity to continue attending school. After the military coup in 1960 , he got to know Marxism. He began studying law at Ankara University . He broke off his studies to work at the Sol Yayınları publishing house , which was founded by his brother. When his brother was arrested as a result of the military coup in 1971 , Erdost took over the editing of the publisher. After the military coup in 1980 , he and his brother were arrested on November 7, 1980. The two brothers were severely ill-treated, and İlhan Erdost suffocated to death 20 minutes after arriving in his cell. After his death, his brother changed his name to Muzaffer İlhan Erdost. The soldiers who killed İlhan were sentenced to eight to ten years in prison. Sergeant in charge Şükrü Bağ, who had ordered his men to let İlhan's "mother cry", was also sentenced to long imprisonment in 1984. After several confirmations of judgment, reversals and renegotiations, he was finally sentenced to six months in prison in 1987 for “negligence in office”.
